Recently, our Clinical Director, Franco Molteni, participated in an important scientific conference organized by FONDATION GARCHES in Paris to discuss the new frontiers in stroke treatment. This is a quick recap of the debate.

✔ There is a significant need for prediction models for the recovery of function following a stroke. These models will be extremely important for advancing research in rehabilitation. Indeed, we need to assess whether innovative rehabilitation treatments can modify the predictions made by these models that are based on conventional treatments.

✔ One of the pillars of rehabilitation is regenerative medicine. Some research projects are testing futuristic methods for administering regenerative cells. One hypothesis suggests the possibility of administering them through a nasal spray.

✔ During the subacute and chronic phases post-stroke, the utilization of new robotic technologies will be another staple. These collaborative robots will be able to boost neuroplasticity through neuromodulation by stimulating new functional neural networks, thereby affecting the Central Nervous System (CNS) at both the brain and spinal cord levels, as well as the autonomic system.

✔ In the acute phase, meaning within the first 2 hours after the stroke, the objective is to preserve as much brain tissue as possible by intervening in the shortest period of time. Whereas, in the rehabilitative phase, the goal will be to regenerate the brain by filling the time with the most effective treatments available.
