July 24, 2025 – This week Our Scientific Director, Franco Molteni, was a guest at a seminar organized by the Rehab Technologies Lab of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, as part of the flagship initiative “Technologies for Healthy Living”.
The seminar focused on Rehabilitation 4.0, which is inspired by the principles of P4Medicine, a new paradigm of medicine that differs from traditional approaches. The 4 Ps stand for:
- Prediction. Rehabilitation medicine employs assessment tools and biomarkers, enhanced by sensor technologies, to predict functional outcomes. Wearable sensors continuously monitor physiological markers, while smart textiles track muscle activation. These technologies help identify patients at risk for complications, enabling proactive interventions based on real-time data analytics.
- Prevention. Rather than waiting for a disability to worsen, Rehabilitation Medicine focuses on preventing secondary complications through continuous monitoring. Smart sensors track daily activities and detect early signs of functional decline, while wearable devices monitor cardiovascular conditioning.
- Personalization. Rehabilitation is inherently individualized, with sensors enabling unprecedented customization. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and preferences, informed by continuous data from multiple sensor modalities. Machine learning algorithms analyze sensor data to personalize therapy protocols and optimize interventions based on individual response patterns.
- Participation. Patient engagement is further enhanced by interactive sensor-based technologies. Gamified rehabilitation platforms that utilize motion sensors and virtual reality (VR) systems make therapy more engaging, while real-time feedback empowers patients to take ownership of their recovery.
