Our Vision

Researching advanced technologies that engage with patients

Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the Central Nervous System (CNS) to modify its connections and behaviors in response to new information, sensory input, developmental changes, or dysfunction. To leverage neuroplasticity, promote recovery, and enhance functionality, we study and test advanced and innovative technologies in clinical settings.

At the forefront of these technologies are robotics, particularly collaborative robots, commonly referred to as cobots. These machines are capable of establishing a relationship with the individual, interacting with him/her to the point that they can predict his/her intentions to move.

Equally important is the field of neuromodulation: integrated electrical stimulation of muscles during motion, transcutaneous spinal stimulation, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, which can be combined with robotic devices to selectively stimulate and modulate specific cerebral or spinal control circuits, thus facilitating new learning methods of motor and cognitive functions.

An important role is played by new virtual reality, mirror therapy, and biofeedback systems. Finally, artificial intelligence is used in the management of the technological devices and processing of clinical and instrumental data.

Due to the significant synergy with Villa Beretta Rehabilitation Center, our activities span from bench to patient, seamlessly transitioning from research and the laboratory directly to the patient. Tailored targeted translational care processes, backed by the swift implementation of new knowledge and rehabilitation tools validated in the laboratory, are implemented.

Interdisciplinary teams guarantee the seamless integration of research and innovation activities with traditional rehabilitation procedures. The emotional and relational well-being of individuals is also prioritized at the same level as other treatments, aiming to restore their dignity, serenity, and life plans. All of this takes place in a unique setting: connected to the world.

”The most significant advancements involve the ability of technologies to interact with individuals. These technologies should not replace a person’s will. Instead, they should support and enhance their intention to move
